Lathrop citizens enjoy "party politics"

Here's a view of the infamous "waste of public money" cake. If you look closely, you'll see it's not even a cake, it's a space-station like conglomeration of cupcakes. That saves money from having to cut it, provide plates, etc. On the sides you can see some of those "donut" balls. None of this is any significant expense. Yet the Manteca Bulletin finds fault with this "extravagance!" Sounds like someone has run out of things to criticize.

Maybe the decorative icing is the problem? But how expensive can that be? Apparently you can get a cake inscribed with happy birthday Adolf Hitler for a few dollars at Wal-Mart.
I've noticed this is a common "complaint" or attack. The uninformed complain about some tiny insignificant expense and never complain about the vast waste of tax dollars being spent somewhere else. Sort of like what Bastiat called the "seen vs. the unseen." The "seen" is complained about but it's usually the "unseen" that is more important.

I normally hate the argument that something is such a small expense it doesn't matter -- after all, every penny does count. But keep things in perspective: in the time it takes you to walk from the back of the room to the podium or fill out a purple complaint form speaker slip, the city spends more money than on that plate of cupcakes. It would probably cost more to stop the party than to have it.

Minor expenses are important but the distinction here is that it provides some public benefit. Note in the photo at right citizens get to meet their elected leaders. Shown in the background is the extravagant punch fountain -- which was actually a cheap plastic thing that ran out of punch about 5 minutes into the event. I couldn't fill a thimble with what was dribbling out of it.

The Bulletin writer screeches about "throwing a party without sending an invitation to those who foot the bill, namely the taxpayers." Au contraire -- the reception was published in advance and the doors were thrown open at 6 pm and anyone could come and partake in the goodies. You, the taxpayer, were invited and people did come by.

Instead of complaining about a plate of cupcakes worry about the millions being spent keeping land developers, civil servants and union bosses happy.

Instead of complaining about inviting us to a party let's ask why other cities like Manteca have their parties in secret. They have them, but we're never invited. Maybe they learned that if you invite the tax payers to the party someone will invariably complain about the "waste" and extravagance.

  1. I recieved an e-mail from a couple of "Land Developers" here in the area........Joe, they wanted to know where to pick up their millions of dollars the city is providing to keep them "happy"........Maybe it is Watt Development you speak of where the city agreed to pay them over 877,000.oo dollars in CFF funds for work that was spec'd out for developer cost on road improvements to their site........Or maybe it is Richland that got paid for work that was NEVER completed in Central Lathrop.......They still owe sub-contractors MILLIONS........
Joe .....you hit the nail on the head.......the shrimp and cupcakes cannot come close to the cost of having our cities department heads leave their posts at city hall and join Kristy for "Coffee with the Mayor" on a monthy basis..........maybe thats where the plan surfaced to give city employees a raise and then raise our water and sewer rates 68%.........the initial impact is lessend by only raising the rates 13% a year for 5 years if the Gen'l Fund will loan the finace dept 1.1 million to ease the burden on the city......HOW ABOUT EASING THE BURDON ON TAX PAYERS?.........I can keep going but it looks like I will have to make a donation to MantecaLive for you guys to EVER question Queen Sayles actions or responsibility to conditions that are currently present in Lathrop......

  2. Manteca is trying to make the "land developers" happy but it's not easy. They are a temperamental bunch.

Those are great issues. Water and sewer rates, taxation, spending, CFF's and such.

(I can never figure out why the developers agree to go along with things like the "CFF" fees for the privilege of building things on their own land. If our parents had had to purchase a bus or a train for the "right" to build their own homes on their own property we'd be living in dirt huts today.)

But you know, we had an election -- and 99.44% of the political effort was expended on discourse about who's good, or bad, or who's dumb and who's smart and who's The Whore of Babylon. And we forgot to ask about those "unimportant" things like taxes and the water rates and what in the hell the developers wanted that they weren't getting which was a complete mystery. Not to mention that we have no idea what was wrong with the city manager other than some unnamed person or persons were "unhappy" for some unspecified reason. Maybe they just needed some counseling?

So here we are and none us has any idea what each council member's position on the rate increase is or what their position is on the CFFs or how taxes should be spent. So who's to blame for the way we elect people if we don't even bother to find out what they think about things but instead expend all our efforts on issues that don't matter?
