Keep Lathrop High School open

The Manteca Unified School District will be meeting on Tuesday night to make more cuts to the budget. They're down to the last "hard choices" which include across the board salary cuts for teachers and workers, eliminating bus transportation for students who live outside walking distance and closing Lathrop High School. Dennis Wyatt's opinion piece in January 24's Manteca Bulletin calls for the closing of Lathrop's newly opened high school.
I have grandchildren who attend Manteca schools and the budget cuts have been a big topic of discussion with the oldest, a student at East Union. It's very interesting to hear what the scuttlebutt is on campus from an actual student. We heard that "everyone," including students and teachers, was relieved that Senior Projects were given the ax. We heard that many students are upset with the prospect of school buses being discontinued or being charged for transportation to school...that seems to be a big issue. Eliminating elective and AP courses also is not popular with the kids.

In Wyatt's piece, he thinks that rather than ask any MUSD employees to defer raises or take a cut in pay or hours, the district should close Lathrop High School. He seems to place a lot of blame for opening it prematurely on acting superintendent Jason Messer, though I don't know if that's fair. A couple of years ago we kept hearing how all the schools were becoming overcrowded and there were even signs posted on some elementary school office doors warning that your child might not be able to attend that school because of overcrowding, so register early. The "irrational exuberance" that fueled the housing bubble and all the new people expected to pour into the area extended to the school district and they scrambled to make sure they could accommodate all the new students they expected.

The schools seem to be run not for the benefit of the students, but for the benefit of the unions that most school district employees belong to. Photos from the last school board meeting published here and in the Sun Post showed a sea of blue union shirts dominating the landscape, all there to protest any reductions in raises, salaries, hours or positions that might be considered. Many of them looked angry and scary with scowling faces and crossed arms. To hell with the kids...the employees come first. Wyatt even says, "Employees are covered by negotiated contracts. What they may give up in actual pay — or negotiated raises — now has to be restored and repaid at some point. " Is he saying that they're such bullies that we might as well give them what they want now because they'll just get it anyway sooner or later?
He also says that reducing pay or raises will severely affect the teachers' and employees' morale and that in turn will make them less effective. What about the students' morale? How does cutting education and activities affect their learning or their ability to graduate? Something like 85% of the school budget goes towards personnel. Now they want to take even more of the budget for salaries and at the expense of making the STUDENTS give up more things that help make high school bearable and even enjoyable. California teachers are the highest paid in the nation,* despite the hype you hear about how underpaid they are.
Don't close Lathrop High School. What a morale crusher that will be to the students there. Remember that the school district exists to provide education to over 22,000 students in its care, not to keep union members employed. Do the right thing.
*From Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2007 by the American Federation of Teachers: "For the second consecutive year, California had the highest average teacher salary in 2006-07 at $63,640 or about 25% above the national average."

  1. Hello Jackie....
You hit the nail on the head with this view, although it is a year or so late in coming up with revenue saving ideas. And why is it that the kids are always the first to take the finacial hit from the budget? It is a hard pill to swallow when you drive by the new bus yard and admin building on Louise Ave..... and then they tell us we are out of dough and have to make some very drastic cuts.........What are these people doing? Did this just jump out at the finance dept with no prior notice? Sounds like Lathrop city government trying to tell us they need to raise our water and sewer rates by 125% or we (the city government), go into debt and will have to make up the shortfall difference with taxpayer money.......When did 2 plus 2 equal 5? I am a single dad and if I ran my home budget like the local government bean counters.....my kids and I would be on the streets in a month....... Lathrop High will most likely close because it cost more money to open its doors and keep them open than any other school in the district. They pay an additional 35-45 thousand dollars a month just to pump and haul raw sewage from the school. They also have no storm system to connect to or have a satisfactory road to travel to and fro. Lathrop road is incomplete and is owned by Richland Development......NOT the City!
Michael Dodge (MUSD),pushed for this premature opening and the Lathrop Mayor incouraged it, in spite of public and student safety issues.....For those reasons alone......The school should be closed or required to correct those issues prior to bringing our students safety into question........The kids do not even have a sidewalk to travel from Harlan rd to the school site........Why did they even open up the school with so many outstanding circumstances?

  2. Dan,
I too know that one of the main reasons Lathrop High was opened before the sewer issue, The storm drain issues, and side walks were complete I blam a huge part of that on only one person (kristy Sayles) because she was pushing for it to be opened before everything needed to open Lathrop High was done such as those I mentioned above. Her goal was never to open the school for the best interest of the kids in and around Lathrop other wise she would have made sure that all these issues were in place prior to the school openning it's doors her one and only goal was to make it look good for her second bid as mayor. I am not sure how many people really know the truth about why and how Lathop High was opened it was certain people's greed (Richland) and others quest for more power (Kristy Sayles) it was never for the best interest of the students or their famlies. If it were why then would Kristy first take so much campaign money from Richland and then turn around and sign a huge check some say in the amount of 50 million to Richland ( check it out only Kristy's signature appers on the check no other council members names are on it.)This was tax payers money not hers to give away to her campaign contributors to run out on their obligations. I hope to make people aware that she doesn't even have a high school diploma as she never bothered to earn one and now recently stated she has just recieved her GED only after her education was questioned she decided as she stated then to go and try to earn her GED. I would love to see that document (her GED) if it really does exist.

Back to Lathrop high. It is now open and we as citizens of Lathrop and parents of students must do whatever is in our power to make sure it stays open after all this school is all most of kids know as far as high school we in Lathrop have waited far to long to realize a high school for our children as we pay taxes too, like every other MUSD resident. Mind you we came about the high by lies and betrayals, but I for one will not sit by and let our kids be betrayed anymore by liers and thieves. I truly believe that all those involved in the back door deals and sceams will one day have to explain what they have done to save their souls. I'm just not sure no matter how much they try to turn on the charm it won't work with the one who looks beyond the smiles and sweet talk he knows the heart so I hope those and they know who they realize that sooner than later.
To anyone who thinks the High school should be closed then I'll vote to close it when you vote to close your childs school. who said I was a unfair person?
